    HIV among Black Sexual Minority Men

    Dr. Dyer has focused on HIV prevention and treatment among Black SMM, who continue to be marginalized and carry the stigma of either being disproportionately “at risk” for or living with HIV. She conducted the first study to characterize syndemic relationships among Black SMM in the oldest prospective cohort study of SMM living with HIV in the USA.

    HIV among Black Women

    Building on previous work, which explored depression and antiretroviral adherence for Black women living with HIV, Dr. Dyer explores prevalence and lived experiences of HIV-related stigma, retention in HIV care, and medication adherence among older Black women living with HIV. Future work will build interventions for aging and vulnerable women with HIV .

    Syndemics and HIV Prevalence

    Dr. Dyer's work involves examining multi-level syndemics (intersecting, synergistic, psychological, social, and structural barriers), including the impact of substance use, trauma, poor mental health and criminal justice involvement on HIV risk and acquisition. She also examines differences in depression, social support, and substance use in Black gay and bisexual men.

    Stop-and-Frisk, Arrest, and Incarceration and STI/HIV Risk in Minority MSM

    2017-2022; Co-Investigator

    To address current critical gaps in our understanding of the effects of criminal justice involvement (CJI) on health, Dr. Dyer's team compiled a compendium of data sources (HPTN061 and P18) to examine the effect of CJI on STI/HIV risk in minority MSM.

    This small grant mechanism was a study on syndemics, STI and HIV risk and acquisition in Black Men who have Sex with Men and Women using the HIV Prevention Trials Network 061 Study data.
